Book Excerpt :

The phone rang. And rang. And rang.

Anna groaned and rolled over, fumbling for the receiver.

“’lo.”

“Anna?”

She winced and shut her eyes against the shards of sun coming through the open blinds. Her temples throbbed, and her mouth felt as parched as a dried-out river bed.

“Anna, are you there?”

“Hi, Bec,” she rasped. “Could you dial it down a bit?”

There was a beat of silence, and then Becca’s cautious voice, “Are you alone?”

She risked another glance around the room before closing her eyes again. “Yes.”

“You weren’t answering your cell,” Becca said. “The front desk put me through to your room. Are you all right?”

That was debatable. On a humiliation scale of one to ten, where would she rank getting drunk and throwing herself at a man who looked like the “after” shot in a workout ad?

At least she still had her clothes on. She popped one eye open to double-check. Yep. The dress was a little wrinkled, but definitely intact.

She wondered what Ethan was doing this morning. Probably thanking his lucky stars for his narrow escape. Vague memories of the night before made her cringe. Good thing she was heading back to L.A. today. She didn’t think she could face him in the sober light of day.

Which reminded her of what she’d nearly forgotten: there was a reason she didn’t date. As her sister would say, she sucked at it. Big-time.

“Listen, Bec, can I call you back?”

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“You sure?”

That was the trouble with best friends: they could tell when you were lying. And they weren’t shy about sticking their noses into your business.

“Fifteen minutes,” Anna promised.

~~~
A hot shower, two cups of coffee, and three ibuprofen later, she felt slightly more human and in control.
“You did what?” Becca shrieked, after hearing an abbreviated version of yesterday’s debacle.
“Just a little louder, Bec. I don’t think the citizens of Kansas heard you.”
“Wow. Ethan Talbot. I can’t believe I had to drag it out of you.”
Anna switched to speaker phone and lifted her suitcase atop the bed. “It’s not like I planned it,” she said, gathering discarded items of clothing and tucking them into a laundry bag. “It just happened.”
“Period cramps just happen. Weight gain just happens. Ending a three-year-old dry spell with Ethan Talbot doesn’t just happen.”
“I didn’t exactly end the dry spell.” She shoved the shoes into a different bag. “He dropped me back at the hotel and left. End of story.”
“Well, don’t keep me in suspense. When are you seeing him again?”
“I’m not.” She debated dumping the unused box of condoms. It wasn’t as if she’d need them any time soon.
Then again….She glanced at the expiration date. Two years. A lot could happen in two years.
“Why not?” Becca prodded.
“Because I’m heading home.” What the hell. She tossed the condoms in her suitcase. “Besides, we have nothing in common. And he refused to release Klara from the Fellowship.”
“Anna, sweetie, sorry for pointing out the obvious, but most people view the Talbot Fellowship as something prestigious.”
“It’s not a degree, Bec. It’s not even a certificate.”
“Maybe not, but it’ll still look good on Klara’s CV.”
Anna ducked into the bathroom for her toiletry bag.
Becca’s voice followed her. “You know Klara will do what she wants, regardless of what you say. Which means you’ve got two choices: prolong the battle and risk alienating her completely, or accept what she’s doing and move on.”
Anna returned to the bedroom. “What’s option C?”
“It wouldn’t kill you to be a little more flexible. Klara’s the only family you have. Shame to lose her over something that’s going to be over in two years.”
Anna sighed. “Bec, the problem is, we’re not just talking two years. We’re talking her entire future.”
“Does the word hyperbole mean anything to you?”
Anna ignored her attempt at humor. “If Klara doesn’t finish her education, she’ll end up regretting it. Maybe not now, but someday.” She glanced around to see if there was anything left to pack.
“She can always go back to school,” Becca said. “There are plenty of returning students of all ages.”
“I guess.”
“And look on the bright side. Now that Klara’s moved out, you have the whole place to yourself. You can finally have a social life.”
“Is that supposed to cheer me up?” Anna said, zipping the suitcase.
“It’s all in the attitude. Now tell me more about Ethan Talbot.”
“Nothing more to tell.”
“Come on, you have to do better than that.”
“Seriously, Bec. I’m lucky if the guy doesn’t turn around and walk the other way the moment he sees me.”
“I’m sure you’re exaggerating.”
“I’m not.”
“Okay, so what did you do?”
“I threw myself at him.”
“You what?”
Anna winced and lowered the cell phone volume. “I may have had a little too much to drink.” She waited for Becca’s laughter to taper off. “It’s not that funny.”
“Sorry. I’m just trying to picture it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you drunk.”
“Yeah, well don’t hold your breath.” Anna lifted the suitcase off the bed. “I have to go check out.”
“Wait—that’s it?”
Anna sighed. “It’s a long drive, Bec. I’ll talk to you when I get home.”
Two hours later, her phone buzzed. She ignored it. Another hour passed before she pulled into a rest stop to use the facilities and check messages.
She read Ethan’s text while standing in line for coffee.
How are you feeling?
Oh, boy. Mortified would just about cover it. Hung over would work too. And determined to put the entire unfortunate interlude with Ethan behind her.
“Next.”
She dropped the phone back in her bag and stepped up to the counter.
Two and a half hours later, as she unlocked the front door of her Santa Monica apartment, another text came through:
You OK?
Clearly, the man wasn’t going to let it go until she responded.
She dumped her belongings in the living room and typed:
All good. Back in LA.
His response was immediate:
Didn’t get chance to say goodbye.
She sank down on the couch.
Sorry, she wrote. Goodbye.
And that should have been the end of it. Except for some reason, Ethan seemed determined to go off script.
When are you back in SF?
Was he asking because he wanted to see her again, or because he wanted advance notice so he could avoid running into her? She wouldn’t blame him if it was the latter. She’d never made such a fool of herself before. The only thing that would have been worse was if he’d taken her up on her offer, and then she’d vomited all over him. Or passed out in the middle of things. Or woken up naked and alone and not remembering a damn thing about how she got that way.
Considering all the worst case scenarios that hadn’t happened, she supposed she should be grateful. But that didn’t mean she wanted to see Ethan again. Ignoring the little voice in her head that said liar, liar, she texted back:
Busy with work. Have to stay in LA.
Then she shut off her phone and headed for the bedroom. She squelched any residual guilt by reminding herself that they had nothing in common. If he tried texting or calling her again, she’d simply ignore him. The same way he’d ignored her emails and phone calls when she’d first attempted to contact him.
Of course he hadn’t known her then. He probably got a ton of spam and solicitations, and her messages might have gotten lost in the shuffle—assuming they ever reached him at all. Now that they’d met, the dynamics had changed.
But that was beside the point. She didn’t belong in his world, and he had no place in hers. Best to cut her losses before anyone got hurt. And by anyone, she meant herself. Because she really couldn’t imagine a man like Ethan Talbot getting too hung up on a woman whose IQ far exceeded her bra size.
She toed off her sensible flats, stripped off her clothes, and climbed into the shower. Time to get back to real life.
Disappointmentville: Her Stepbrothers Are Aliens by Trinity Blacio
- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Kindle Edition - File Size: 287 KB | Expected Release Date: July 28, 2015 | Publisher: Riverdale Avenue Books | Obtained: NetGalley
"Her Stepbrothers Are Aliens" by Trinity Blacio (aka Maria MoonStar)
Author's Book Description : Lea Clark was so happy when her Mom finally found the man of her dreams. She thought that not having to worry about her mom any more would take a load off of her shoulders, but she got so much more than she ever imagined when she married into this family!
Not only had her mother married an alien from another planet, but her stepfather was from a family of warriors to boot.
Did she mention that her stepfather had, not one, but two hot sexy warrior sons? And that her so-called stepbrothers claimed she was their mate as well?
Talk about keeping it in the family!
My Book Review : 2.5 out of 5 stars. Lea's mother recently married her forth husband, but even she can see that this matchup is ideal since he seems to treasure her mom with all her quirks. The only oddity is .... her new stepfather is an alien. Yet even though Lea has dealt with the surprise of it all very comely, it's the new shock of her "stepbrothers" announcing she is their mate that throws her for a loop, especially with all the sudden changes that being their mate entails.
Intense and dynamic, with this novella plan to expect the unexpected! While I liked the characters very much I had a hard time keeping up with its plot. Because of its novella length it felt like the plot’s information was rushed at times and it was building up to a book series that I’m not sure will ever surface. With that being said, I liked how we got to read from all the main characters POVs (Lea, Gunner, & Rogue). In addition, I enjoyed how their mating played out.
I recommend this novella to those who are fans of Ms. Blacio and/or those looking for dynamic sci-fi erotic romance.
"Couldn't there be a mistake?"
The warrior, Gunner, came over and sat next to her on the bed. "No there is no mistake. When one of us is in close proximity to our mate there is a change in both parties. May I?" He asked, and nodded to her hand.
She frowned but nodded, placing her hand into his. He turned it over and traced a small rectangle shaped mark on her wrist.
"Well damn! When did that happen?" she said, glancing at he wrist.
"Most likely on Friday. Your mark is in a place I don't believe you would want to see right now?" Gunner glanced down to his crotch. ~ within Chapter 2
Made the Grade: Korbel Classic Romance Humorous Series, Book 3
- This is an ARC book - Available Formats through Amazon.com: Paperback - Pages: 219; Kindle Edition - File Size: 2685 KB | Expected Release Date: October 13, 2015 | Publisher: ePublishing Works! | Obtained: Goddess Fish Promotions
"A Prince of a Guy" [Korbel Classic Romance Humorous Series, Book 3] by Kathleen Korbel (aka Eileen Dreyer)
Author's Book Description : When New Yorker Casey Phillips visits the tiny country of Moritania, she simply wants to see where her ancestors came from. Instead, she’s mistaken for a princess.
The real princess has been kidnapped, and Crown Prince Eric von Lieberhaven insists Casey—a dead ringer for the missing royal—step into the princess’s shoes until she can be freed.
As Casey upends royal tradition, Eric finds himself hoping the cheeky American never returns home. But can a secretary from Brooklyn really find happiness with a prince?
My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars, while on an European vacation a woman decides to visit the small country that her great-great-grandfather was said to have come from and finds herself embroiled in the country's royal secrets very quickly. All because of her looks and one charming Prince who can't seem to let her go.
This novel definitely interested me in the beginning. You have a charming Prince (Eric) who has no intention of wanting the crown. An outspoken New Yorker (Casey/Cassandra) who is beautiful in her own right but also looks a bit like the Crown Princess (and basically has the same name) helps the Prince to pull off a scheme while falling for the Prince in the process. Together these two make a very cute couple and I enjoyed how Casey literally steps into the Princess' shoes.
However, what through me a few times about this novel was that Casey & Eric are basically related (as they find the mystery of Casey's background ... they find that they're distant cousins). Then Eric falling for his niece's doppelganger (looks-wise at least) is a little weird too. So, if you can completely get over that than I think you will enjoy this novel very much!
What made me like this novel even more than I had originally was how it all wrapped up in the end. The Crown Princess seems to be a bit of a nutcase. Yet, Casey's heroism and Eric's deviousness make the ending quite exciting and fun!
I DO recommend this novel to those looking for an entertaining contemporary "Prince & the Pauper"-esque romance!
Book Excerpt :
“So where is she?” Dru leaned against the bar. When he’d looked up the place, he’d known the location was a test to see how high they could get on midlevel. He was also expecting Kya to be here already, probably up above watching them. He let his gaze drift.
“Er…not sure yet. There are so many people. Do you think she comes here often?”
“No.” Dru sipped his drink. If he was meeting people for the first time, he wouldn’t be inviting them to his local. But many people weren’t as careful as him. “Maybe.” He shrugged. “Only one way to find out.”
Tref scanned the aerial bar and lowered his gaze just as quickly. “She’s wearing a pink dress, and with a dark-haired woman in a suit.”
“The two who just landed?” Dru couldn’t help the curve of his lips as Tref drew in a sharp breath. He’d never seen Tref get so flustered by a woman. It was a real pity Dru was leaving tomorrow. He’d like to watch this interaction play out a little longer.
Kya folded her wings after landing neatly in the clear drop zone from the aerial bar. Her friend followed. Where Kya was golden, like the Huntress made mortal, her friend was pale-skinned and with dark hair. As she turned, Dru sucked in a breath.
He leaned closer to Tref. “Her friend is Judge Elmi Chadee.”
“What?”
Dru lowered his voice. “Judge Chadee was on that case last year. If Kya moves in those circles, you’re reaching too high.”
“She’s an architect.”
“With connections.” Judge Chadee probably had a rooftop suite in a private precinct. Coming here was no doubt her idea of slumming it. How did Kya know the judge? How well did she know the judge? While he’d been looking forward to meeting Kya, now he was wary.
Tref shrugged. “She agreed to a drink. Besides, if I’d stayed at my level…” He gave Dru a knowing look and then turned away.
Tref had a point, but women didn’t descend for anyone. They picked and chose, and men who wanted to risk life to be with them had to lift themselves to be noticed. But even then, because Dru didn’t have wings, he could only go so high before the fear of falling took over. And he wanted a triad, with children—something he was still trying to convince Tref was a good idea.
This was the first time Tref had done the introduction for a potential partner. Maybe the idea was becoming more appealing, and he simply needed a little more time to come around. Dru sipped his drink and watched as Elmi and Kya walked over. They touched and leaned in close to share a whispered comment—probably about Tref and him. They were obviously close, lovers since they weren’t married. Neither of the women had earrings.
Tref greeted Kya with a brief brush of the back of his hand. It was impossible not to notice the gleam of attraction in Kya’s eyes. When Tref turned to introduce him, it was mirrored in his eyes. Dru smiled even though he had the sinking feeling Tref was going to get burned by the sun for trying to fly.
Book Excerpt :
Somewhere in the Alps, 1987
Twenty minutes later, Casey occupied a chair in the little booth at the edge of Moritania while two officers dressed like the Pope's Swiss Guards scuttled around trying to find new and different ways to make her more comfortable. She assured them that there was only so much comfort one could find at a border crossing. All she succeeded in doing was making them look more miserable. But when she asked whether the American consul was coming, or even a tow truck, all they did was exchange worried little glances.
"Soon now, my lady," the spokesman assured her, actually wringing his hands. "He promised."
Casey shrugged again, thinking that she was doing a lot of that, and crossed her legs, resettling her wide denim skirt around her legs. Not exactly climbing clothes. But then, Julie Andrews had done the Alps in a habit.
"This is real Sound of Music country," she said, not really expecting an answer by now. "Of course, you guys were probably raised on Wagner and Romberg."
No answer.
"Romberg," she repeated. "You know, Student Prince?"
"Cassandra, what on earth are you up to now?"
Casey lifted her head with a start at the sound of the new voice. Then her mouth dropped open and her brain stalled. Now how had he snuck up on her?
The guards were saluting now, and a new man stood in the doorway. Man? More like a miracle. He was breathtaking, the kind of man she was sure she had never in her life run into on the streets of Brooklyn. Clad in precisely pressed gray flannel slacks, a hunter's jacket of tweed and leather and a wool sweater over a snow-white shirt and navy blue tie, he looked more like an English lord gone to tour his estate.
Tall, maybe six feet, and slim. Athletic. Casey could imagine him on a polo pony or a yacht, the wind sweeping through his golden-brown hair. He had a face that would have made Cary Grant cry: long, with an aquiline nose, a strong chin and a well-bred brow. It was a cultured face with eyes the color of a summer sky, although right now that summer sky seemed a bit chilly. And it went with an actual English accent. In the Alps.
A most practical child, Casey had never been able to figure how Cinderella could have been swept off her feet within the space of one dance. If this guy had been the one wearing the tights, it would have made perfect sense. She was in love before she even knew his name.
He turned briefly and dispatched the guards with a gentle word. The relief on their features was palpable as they straightened and departed.
"How did you do that?" Casey asked, getting to her feet. "No matter what I did they kept checking out their toes. It's kind of unnerving after awhile, ya know?"
Her guest considered her with evident frustration. "When are you going to stop? You're not going to make them better subjects by playing games with them. And you're certainly playing havoc with my schedule."
"Thanks for the interest," Casey said, smiling dryly. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"And where in heaven's name did you pick up that atrocious accent?"
Casey was bristling now. "From my mother. She has one just like it. Listen, my car broke down and I need a tow. And I forgot my passport back at the hotel. Otherwise I wouldn't have had you paged. Are you with the American embassy?"
He straightened a little, his head tilted at an angle of inspection. "Cassandra..."
"Nobody's called me Cassandra since the nuns. Actually, they called me Mary Cassandra, but...” She blinked, taken aback. “Wait. How did you know my name?" She shook her head, the confusion mounting. "Listen, I'll tell you what. If you're not with the embassy, just call me a tow or whatever. If this is an example of Moritanian hospitality, I don't think I want to visit after all. I'd have more fun in the Bronx on a Saturday night."
Casey had more to say. Something about rudeness and insanity and lack of oxygen at high altitudes. She never quite got it out. As she was speaking, the gentleman's eyes widened with an incredulity that gave her pause. His mouth opened and he stepped up to her. When he laid a hand under her chin and lifted it, she fell mute.
His eyes caught hers and held them. His hand, graceful and strong, stilled her. With just that contact, Casey found herself suffused with a sweet hesitation she'd never known. A languid heat, as if his eyes were stealing her strength. She looked up at him and forgot what she'd been about to say and why it had been important. Hell, given a minute more and she'd forget her name and birthday.
"Bloody hell," he breathed, his gaze suddenly sharpening. His eyes swept her features, her attire, and then came back to rest on her face. "You're not like her at all, are you? Not at all."
Casey couldn't seem to drag her eyes away. "I... wouldn't know. Who?"
"Who are you?"
"Casey Phillips. Who are you?"
He actually opened his mouth and closed it once before answering. "Eric von Lieberhaven."
Their voices had grown soft somehow, intimate in the little room. It was Mr. Von Lieberhaven who broke the spell first, pulling his hand away as if he'd been scalded. Casey saw him rub it against his leg in what she was sure was an uncharacteristic gesture. She wasn't sure how she knew. She just did.
"But why did they call you?" she asked when he moved far enough away that she could breathe again. "You never told me. Do you work for the American embassy? Or the English embassy?"
The smile he gave her was a bright one, rueful and wry. He had beautiful white teeth and a pattern of crow's-feet from the sun and wind that imbued his smiles with an endearing warmth. Casey smiled back without knowing why.
"No," he assured her. "I am not with the embassy."
That fancy British accent again. Not the kind you heard on BBC. The real posh one, just a bit nasally. If he hadn't been standing right in front of her, Casey would have tried to mimic it. It was the closest she'd been to traveling to other countries before this.
What she really wanted, she realized, was to get to know Eric von Whatever better. Fat chance, from the looks of him. He looked as if he'd been afforded more in life than a flat and a high school education.
Outside the phone jangled, and one of the guards went to answer it.
"Your Highness?"
Eric turned to him.
Casey gaped. "Your what?"
While Cait Braxton's childhood friends dreamed of becoming ballerinas, nurses and movie stars, Cait wanted to be a cowgirl when she grew up. Some of her best memories stem from long visits to her grandparents' farm. Here she reveled in the delectable scents of pines trees, leather and horse. Her idea of a grand adventure wasn't hosting a make-believe tea party but rather riding through the woods and fields on the back of beautiful stallion.
Her love of the Old West (and the New) continues to this day. That's why she writes about strong alpha cowboys and the courageous women who loved them. She hopes you share her love for a majestic, rugged time gone-by and...the cowboys of today.
Kristin Holt: I recall the winter of my first grade year, basking in the heat from our fireplace in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Dad read aloud Madeline L'Engle's A WRINKLE IN TIME and Mom peeled orange segments for us to enjoy. That was the definitive moment I fell in love with fiction.
I write sweet (wholesome) romances set in the 19th Century American West. I'm newly active in a fantastic Facebook group for authors and readers of Western Historical Romances.
